Compatibility
Which printers work with Retill
Retill prints to thermal receipt printers that use ESC/POS, the standard language most receipt printers understand. If the box says “ESC/POS”, “POS printer” or “thermal receipt printer”, it will most likely work.
Supported connections
On iPhone and iPad, Apple limits which Bluetooth devices apps can use, so most low-cost “Classic” Bluetooth printers only work on Android.
| Connection | Android | iPhone / iPad |
|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth (Classic) | Yes | Epson only |
| Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) | Yes | Yes |
| Wi‑Fi / Ethernet | Epson only | Epson only |

Paper width
Retill lays out receipts for 80 mm paper (48 characters per line), the most common size for counter-top receipt printers.
58 mm printers (small handheld printers) may connect and print, but some lines may wrap awkwardly or get cut off. For the best results, use an 80 mm printer.
Not supported
- Label and sticker printers. Niimbot D11 and B21, Phomemo M02 and T02, PeriPage A6, Paperang P1. They may show up in the scan but use their own formats.
- Star Micronics TSP100 / TSP143. These printers don’t support ESC/POS.
- Office printers (inkjet or laser). They can’t be connected as receipt printers, but you can share the receipt PDF and print it from your phone.
- USB-only printers. The mobile app can’t use USB printers. Use them with the Retill web dashboard instead.
Setup guide
Connect your printer in 7 steps
You only need to do this once on each phone or tablet. Retill remembers your printer, even after you close the app.
- 1
Prepare the printer
Load paper and switch the printer on. Make sure it isn’t connected to another phone, tablet or computer.
- Wi‑Fi/Ethernet printers must be on the same network as your phone.
- 2
Pair it (only if needed)
Most printers appear in Retill without pairing.
- Android: if yours doesn’t show up, pair it in Settings → Bluetooth first. Try PIN 0000 or 1234.
- iPhone: BLE printers need no pairing. For Epson Bluetooth printers, tap Pair Bluetooth in Retill.
- 3
Open the printer screen
In the Retill app, go to Settings → Device Configuration → Receipt Printer.
- 4
Allow permissions
Your phone asks for permission the first time you scan. Allow everything, or Retill can’t find your printer.
- Android: Nearby devices and Location. Keep Location switched on while scanning.
- iPhone: Bluetooth, and Local Network for Wi‑Fi printers.
- 5
Scan for printers
Tap Scan for printers. The search takes about 10 seconds.
- The list shows printers only by default. If your printer has an unusual name, switch the filter to All.
- 6
Save your printer
Tap your printer in the list. It moves to the Saved printer card at the top, marked Saved. You can also swipe it left and tap the checkmark.
- 7
Do a test print
Tap Test print. The printer should print a short slip reading “Retill – Printer connected” with the printer’s name and address.
Printing a receipt after a sale
- Complete a sale as usual. The receipt opens on screen.
- Tap Print.
- The receipt prints on your saved printer. If the printer has a cutter, the paper is cut automatically.
No printer saved yet? Tapping Print opens the printer setup screen. Once you save a printer, the receipt prints automatically.
Printer unavailable? Use Share to send the receipt PDF by WhatsApp, email or messages, or Download to save it.
Printing from the web dashboard
On a computer, open a sale's receipt and click Print receipt. Your browser's print window opens, where you can:
- Choose any printer installed on your computer, including USB receipt printers and office printers.
- Set the paper size to match your roll (for example 80 mm) and margins to None for the best fit.
The web dashboard uses your computer's printers, not the printer saved in the mobile app.
Managing your printer
All of these are on the printer screen in Settings → Device Configuration → Receipt Printer.
| What you want to do | How to do it |
|---|---|
| Check the printer still works | Tap Test print |
| Stop using the saved printer | Tap Deselect, or tap the saved printer in the list |
| Switch to a different printer | Tap the other printer in the list |
| Hide a device from the list | Swipe it left and tap the trash icon |
| Hide every device | Tap Forget all |
| Bring back hidden devices | Tap Scan fresh |

Troubleshooting
Printer not working?
Find your problem below and work through the fixes in order.
My printer doesn’t appear in the list
- Turn the printer off and on, check it has paper, then scan again.
- Switch the filter to All. Your printer may have a name Retill doesn’t recognise as a printer.
- Tap Scan fresh in case you forgot the printer earlier.
- Android: turn on Bluetooth and Location, allow Nearby devices and Location for Retill, and try pairing the printer in Bluetooth settings.
- iPhone: allow Bluetooth for Retill in Settings. Most low-cost Classic Bluetooth printers can’t be used on iPhone. You need a BLE or Epson printer.
- Wi‑Fi printers: make sure your phone and the printer are on the same network. Only Epson network printers are found automatically.
- Disconnect other phones or tablets from the printer, and move closer (Bluetooth range is about 10 metres).
“Printer search failed” or “permission is required”
- Tap Open Settings in the message.
- Android: Settings → Apps → Retill → Permissions, then allow Nearby devices and Location.
- iPhone: Settings → Retill, then turn on Bluetooth (and Local Network for Wi‑Fi printers).
“Test print failed” or “Print failed”
- Check the printer is on, has paper, and the cover is closed.
- Make sure no other device is printing to it at the same time.
- Turn the printer off and on, wait a few seconds, and try again.
- Deselect the printer, tap Scan fresh, and save it again.
The printer is found but nothing prints, or it prints symbols
- The printer probably doesn’t use ESC/POS. This is common with label and mini photo printers.
- Star Micronics printers must be switched to ESC/POS mode. Check the printer’s manual.
The receipt looks too wide or text is cut off
- You’re probably using a 58 mm printer. Retill receipts are designed for 80 mm paper.
It worked yesterday but not today
- Check whether the printer was paired or connected to another device.
- Wi‑Fi printers can get a new network address after a router restart. Tap Scan fresh and save the printer again.

Printer questions
Questions and answers
No. Once saved, your printer stays saved on that phone or tablet until you deselect or forget it.
Yes. Set up the printer on each phone. Retill disconnects after every receipt, so devices can take turns. Just avoid printing from two devices at exactly the same moment.
One printer can be saved on each device at a time. To switch, open the printer screen and tap the other printer.
Not directly from the mobile app. On the receipt screen, tap Share. On iPhone, choose Print to send it to an AirPrint printer. On Android, open the PDF in your printer’s app or a PDF viewer with a print option.
No. Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi printing happen directly between your phone and the printer.
Not with the mobile app. You can use a USB receipt printer with the Retill web dashboard on a computer, through your browser’s print window.
Apple only lets apps connect to Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) printers and certified accessories such as Epson printers. Many low-cost printers use Classic Bluetooth, which works on Android but not iPhone.
For iPhone and Android, an Epson TM printer in a Bluetooth or Wi‑Fi version, such as the TM‑m30III (counter-top) or TM‑P80II (portable). For Android only, almost any 80 mm ESC/POS Bluetooth printer, such as the Xprinter XP‑P300, Rongta RPP300 or HPRT HM‑E300. For a counter shared by several devices, a Wi‑Fi or Ethernet Epson printer is the most reliable choice.
